Aquatera Community Skating Rink will not open this year

Although you may think it is chilly outside, it still is not cold enough for a local ice rink. This would have been the 3rd year the Aquatera Community Skating Oval opened to the public but it will not be opening this year due to weather. Coordinator Xaverie MacLennan says the temperatures have not been cold enough to start up the rink.

“We run off sponsorship from Aquatera and the city of Grande Prairie. That is a lot of sponsored water to be pouring onto the ground without it actually sticking in place for the season and making an ice rink.”

MacLennan says keeping the rink up to par is a big task and the limited snowfall has made it even harder.

“We unfortunately had to make the choice that we weren’t going to go through with it this late in the year. It would not have been responsible to use our funds and our water in that way.”

She says although it is sad for the rink users but she assures the 2016-2017 season will be a successful one.
