Holocaust survivor sharing story with Peace region

When holocaust survivor Eva Olsson visits schools around the Peace region next week, the youth will be getting more than just a history lesson. Peace Wapiti School Division Superintendent Sheldon Rowe says students study the holocaust and World War two, but listening to someone who went through it will really bring the message home.

“It’s an opportunity for kids to learn a lot about how someone inciting racial hatred can lead to horrendous consequences. The process down this road starts when one group starts to depersonalize other groups within our society and incite different treatment.”

Olsson was moved to a concentration camp in 1945 when she was just 19 years old. She survived nearly two years before she was liberated by Canadian and British soldiers in 1945.

She’ll be speaking to several schools as well as to the public at the library on October 19th and at the Douglas J. Cardinal Theatre on the 21st. Both start at 7 p.m. and are free for the public to attend. Her visit is sponsored by Grande Prairie Rotary clubs.
