Spirit River mountie trial adjourned for funding issue

Constable Matthew Slipp was supposed to spend this week on trial for perjury and intent to mislead, but instead, he’s been granted an adjournment. The 27 year old Spirit River mountie has been suspended with pay since December 2013 for allegedly faking a legal document in connection with an incident the prior February.

Crown counsel Photini Papadatou says Slipp originally received $5,000 for court costs from the RCMP, but a second request for $50,000 more was denied in August of this year. He requested the adjournment last week to figure out how he will proceed, as Justice Whittmann reportedly told him it’s unlikely he’ll qualify for legal aid.

Another date for trial will be set Wednesday, but Papadatou warns it could be months before the case concludes.
