Rotary District Conference hosts Hadfield

Commander Chris Hadfield paid another visit to the Peace Region Friday, speaking at Rotary’s annual District Conference in Dawson Creek. The conference plays host to more than 500 delegates from around northern Alberta, northwestern Saskatchewan, northeastern British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories.

Program Chair Joe Judge says Rotarians had a chance to hear from a number of notable speakers.

“We have Sally Armstrong, a journalist and author over a number of years, on women’s rights around the world. She goes to countries like Afghanistan and places like that and talks to women and tells their story around the world. We have Alvin Law, a Thalidomide child from the sixties, he has no arms and he’s very, very inspiring. That’s a great ‘What if?’ because what if said ‘I can’t do anything, I’m just going to lay here and let people look after me,’?”

Judge says the theme of the conference for both speakers and delegates was ‘What if?’.

Hadfield embraced that theme as he spoke about his time as commander of the International Space Station and the impact he hopes his experience has had on young people across Canada.
