A Regional Sexual Violence Awareness Program is one of 76 projects getting funding from the province to help reduce violence in communities. The PACE program reaches out to residents in Grande Prairie, Peace River, Valleyview and High Prairie to help them become more aware of and be able to respond to sexual violence, along with programs in schools. In total it’s getting 165,000.
The Alberta government has handed out nearly $10 million dollars to groups with similar missions, including $133,320 for the John Howard Society of Grande Prairie. It will be hiring a full-time mental health worker for the Tabono Project, aimed at supporting youth through mentorship and group learning.
Also benefitting in the Peace River area are Sagitawa Friendship Society with $161,150 for its youth centre, and $166,667 for the Dene Tha’ First Nations’ use of an outreach worker to decrease family violence and develop a community action plan.
