Local shelters need water donations

At this point the summer, local homeless shelters are seeing an increased need for water donations. Homeless Initiatives Supervisor Katherine Sheppard says they often get food and toiletries donated, but even more basic needs can be forgotten.

“I think the water situation is something that a lot of people don’t really think about. When you’re outside, if you’re a person that may be using shelter at nighttime but not during the day and you’re out walking around all day in the heat, water’s important.”

Sheppard says cases of bottled water are great, but they’re also looking for reusable water bottles than can be filled with tap water. Donations can be dropped off at the Salvation Army, the Friendship Centre or HIV North, and will be shared amongst the shelters in need. Donations can also be left with shelters directly, but they ask that you call ahead.
